Here is a sneak peek of some of the insights from our upcoming mobile Youth report

We asked students what the next great thing in youth mobile trends would be with them -

* prepaid or contracts?
* mobile TV or SMS?
* mobile internet/wap?

I think names are really important… they get known as well

~ one 16 year old student describing her Orange contract

As a sneak preview of our upcoming 2008 mobileYouth report out next week let me share with you some video of on the street insights into mobile Youth consumers.

“It breaks my heart” says one 18 year old about mobile operators marketing to him.

“You get all happy thinking that someone loves you, then you realize they just want you to buy something”

Well, we had a bit of a rush on sign ups in the hours that followed the last post on the mobileYouth social network. So, we hit 150 members very quickly and the numbers are growing. Individuals from Vodafone, Telenor, T-Mobile, Nokia, HP, Apple as well as bloggers, singers and artists were among those who signed up.

So, the mobileYouth social network is closed to new applications only - so we can properly BETA test it.

This means you can only join if invited by an existing member.

I hope you appreciate the forward understanding in this matter - we have 950 people invited by other members already, so as you can imagine things ramped up a bit faster than we anticipated :)

We’re getting there, with over 100 guys and gals signing up to Mobile Youth Net this weekend… all from word of mouth. Let’s see how things develop here… Signup from all over the world - ad agencies, analysts, marketing gurus, TV companies, record labels and operators. BETA is still open so register to try it out

The teen market in the U.S. has typically been among the fastest growing in the wireless industry and by the age of 17 at least 91 percent of girls and 78 percent of boys own a mobile phone, according to a new study from Multimedia Intelligence. That market’s now reaching a point of saturation, so the firm looked into key ages where cellphone ownership appeared to surge or slow down.

Teens and Mobile Phones - Audio Interview

Teenagers and Cell Phones: Full, Unedited Interview with André Caron

People of many different ages use cell phones, of course, but for teenagers, it occupies a particularly important role. It’s a social prosthetic, a form of community building, and sometimes the source of battles with parents. Recently, I interviewed André Caron. He’s the director of the CITE at l’Université de Montréal, and Bell Chair in Interdisciplinary Research on Emerging Technologies. He’s also a guy who has done a lot of research into how teens actually use their cell phones, and what role it plays in the development of their culture, in researching his book, Moving Cultures.
